Situation

Gonapinuwala Divisional Secretariat was started on 11^th November 2005 as a new administrative unit by separating 19 GN Divisions which were belongs to the Ambalangoda Divisional Secretariat. It was situated in Ambalangoda Polling division in Galle. District of southern province. First it was started   close the “sarana Handiya” and later it was taken to the current office premise which situated 6.2 Km far away from Galle – Elpitiya 752 road which is close to the Kumarakanda junction which was situated close to the Galle – Colombo A2 road. Gonapinuwala Divisional Secretariat office was situated 5.2 Km far away from Galle – baddegama 395road from Hikkaduwa junction. It was bounded to Ambalangoda Divisional Secretariat office at North, Baddegama Divisional Secretariat office at East, Hikkaduwa Divisional Secretariat office at south and Welivitiya Divisional Secretariat office at west.

Gonapinuwala has a rural and semi urban and self-sufficient economic style and the majority of the population are Sinhala Buddhist. There are many legends related to the name “Gonapinuwala”, One of the says that a moose was jumped into a canal to save his life from hunter word “Gona – Peenu- Ela” which means the canal where moose jumped into Gonapinuwala later. It covers 2337 Hectares of landarea and consists of exporting crops such as Cinnamon, pepper and etc. It has gardens, live stocks, mangroves and etc. Gonapinuwala is a beautiful area which has the attraction of tourists.
